Both are targeting people who want simple terms, low salary requirement and zero recurring cost. They look similar on the surface but they're made for different spenders. Here's a breakdown of where each one takes the win.

RAKBANK Red is a no annual fee card that has been in the UAE for over 10 years. It offers discounts and cashback on everyday categories like groceries, dining and fuel, instead of complex points. If you have a monthly salary of around AED 5,000 you will qualify for it, so it is one of the more accessible mainstream cards in the country.
Liv. is Emirates NBD's digital-first brand. The Liv. Credit Card is available through the Liv. mobile app with a full digital application process, no paper and no branch visit. The standard tier has no annual fee for life and rewards are given as cashback credited to the Liv. account. The salary requirement is similar, usually between AED 5,000 and AED 7,000 depending on the variant.
Earn structure
The RAKBANK Red banks on instant discounts and partner offers over a flat cashback rate. Historically, the card has provided up to 10% off at participating supermarkets like Lulu and select Carrefour stores during promotional windows, as well as discounts at fuel stations and restaurants. These are merchant funded offers, they come and go, which is why a "what does Red earn?" question is never an easy answer.
Liv. takes a more modern, simpler approach. You get a flat cashback rate (typically 1% on most spends) as well as higher rates (typically 2% to 5%) on specific categories such as supermarkets, dining or online merchants depending on the campaign. The cashback hits the Liv. account every month. No redemption ritual needed. Liv. is easier to model for a customer who wants predictable returns.
Annual fee and waivers
Both cards have no annual fee. Red Mastercard has been "free for life" since launch, no spend threshold required. Liv. is also free for life on the entry tier, but the premium tiers, Liv. Prime and the Liv. World card variants, do have fees that can be waived with a spend target. If you want a true no-fee starter, opt for the entry-level Liv. card.
App, statements, and the daily experience

A new graduate or junior professional earning between AED 5,000 and 8,000 who buys at Lulu, eats at casual chains or fuels up at ENOC, is likely to get more raw value from the RAKBANK Red as the merchant discounts in those categories can outpace a flat cashback rate during active campaigns. The problem is that the value is not always there, when the offer cycle is quiet, the Red earns very little.
The Liv. card will appeal to a digital-native who wants predictable, automatic cashback with no thinking involved, the type of person who pays for everything by tapping a phone. The flat cashback model and in-app experience are just nicer in 2026.
If you are a resident or freelancer with no salary transfer, you can apply for either card against a fixed deposit or a stated income, but Liv. has a more seamless onboarding experience as the entire flow is mobile.
The honest verdict
Both cards do the job. If you are an active offer-hunter and willing to follow the campaigns, the RAKBANK Red is the better card. Liv. is the better card if you want the experience to be invisible. Nothing wrong with having both of them, since they are free, and using each one for what it does best: Red for grocery and fuel pushes, Liv. for everything else.
