Booking Award Flights from Dubai: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Booking an award flight from Dubai is simple in theory and brutal in practice. Every new cardholder makes the same mistakes again and again: searching in the wrong cabin, missing partner availability, paying surcharges that eat up the redemption's value, or transferring points after the seat has already been taken. This article walks you through the entire process of a typical Skywards or Etihad Guest redemption, from checking the balance to ticketed PNR.

Step 1: Identify the trip and the redemption goal

Define the trip concretely before logging in to any program. Origin, destination, cabin, dates with two-day flexibility on each end, number of travellers. A vague target, like 'somewhere in Europe in summer', leads to vague searches and vague results.

Determine whether this trip is better served by miles or by cash. Rule of thumb for break-even: miles are usually competitive if the cash fare is above AED 6,000 per person. If it is under AED 3,000 per person, the cash fare is often the better path, as surcharges and redemption fees compress the per-mile yield.

Step 2: Check live award space before transferring points

Most cardholders skip this step. Always confirm that award space exists before transferring points or applying for a co-brand card.

To search for Skywards on Emirates metal, visit emirates.com with 'Use Miles' selected, set 'Skywards Miles' as the search type, and focus on Reward Saver inventory specifically. Reward Saver has the lowest miles rate; Reward Plus and Reward Choice run higher.

For Etihad Guest on Etihad metal: search etihad.com with 'Spend Miles' enabled, and start with Tier 1 dates.

Online search is not reliable for partner awards (Skywards–JAL, Etihad–AA, etc.). Use ExpertFlyer, AwardWallet, or call the program contact centre directly.

Step 3: Calculate the surcharge cost

Award flights aren't free. Both Skywards and Etihad Guest add on 'carrier-imposed surcharges' on top of government taxes, which the program collects in cash, AED, USD, or whichever currency the booking is denominated in.

Common surcharges on round-trip Business redemptions from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to London: AED 1,800 to AED 2,800. Bangkok Business: AED 800 to AED 1,400. Mumbai economy: AED 250 to AED 350.

A 'great' redemption that costs 5 fils per mile, but with AED 3,000 in surcharges, may not actually beat a cash ticket on a sale day. Build the surcharge into your decision before you commit.

Step 4: Verify your points balance and tier

Log in to your airline account and check your available balance, including any points expiring within the year (Skywards tier miles do not roll over and they expire as well; check expiry dates on the dashboard).

If you are short, find the bridge. Bank-to-airline transfers from ENBD Smiles, Citi ThankYou, HSBC Reward Points, or Mashreq Salaam typically take 48 to 72 hours to clear. Welcome bonuses on a new co-brand card take longer, usually 60 to 90 days from approval, depending on hitting qualifying spend.

If you cannot fill the shortfall in time, the redemption is not feasible, and forcing it usually means accepting a worse cabin or worse dates.

Step 5: Initiate the transfer (if needed)

For Skywards co-brand spend, the points are already in Skywards.

For bank-currency balances: transfer via the bank app (ENBD Smiles, Citi ThankYou, HSBC Reward, Mashreq Salaam, Standard Chartered 360 Rewards). Check the ratios and any per-transaction fees at the time of transfer, as banks change them periodically.

For transfers to partner programs (e.g. KrisFlyer or Asia Miles): same as above, but you must also have a member account in the destination program.

Transfers are one-way and irreversible. Do not start a transfer unless you have award space held or visible at the time.

Step 6: Hold or book the seat

Free holds are not available on award reservations with Skywards. For a Reward Saver booking, once you press 'Confirm', miles are deducted immediately and surcharges are charged to the card on file.

Etihad Guest allows you to place a 24-hour hold on award bookings via the contact centre, useful when you want a few hours to coordinate with a travel companion or to confirm dates.

Pay surcharges on the card that maximises reward earn on travel spend. A FAB Etihad Guest Infinite earning 7.5 Miles per AED on Etihad ticket purchases will earn miles on the redemption surcharges, partially offsetting the cash outlay.

Step 7: Save the PNR and confirm the ticket

When you make an award reservation, you should receive a reservation reference on the program side (Skywards or Etihad Guest) and a ticket number from the operating airline. The binding artefact is the ticket number. Without it, the reservation is not ticketed and may collapse without warning.

Verify that the ticket number appears on the booking confirmation email within 24 hours. If it does not, call the program contact centre.

Step 8: Lock in seats, baggage, and meals

Award tickets generally allow you to choose your seat, but the inventory available is sometimes restricted. On Emirates A380 for Skywards Business, prime row seats may be held back until 24 hours before departure. Set a reminder to revisit seat selection at the T-24h mark.

Advance seat selection is normally open for Etihad Guest Business. Pick aisle or window early.

If necessary, special meals can be ordered through the manage-booking page.

Step 9: At the airport, confirm tier benefits

When you arrive at the airport, have your tier card or program app open. Marhaba lounges are available to Skywards Silver and above; the Emirates Business lounge is available to Gold and above. Etihad Guest Silver and above members can access Etihad's lounge at AUH.

Chauffeur transfers, where included, are not automatically triggered and must be pre-booked through the program.

Common failure modes

The seat disappeared between search and book. Award inventory is dynamic; commit within minutes of confirming availability.

Surcharges exceeded budget. Always model the cash component first, before celebrating the per-mile yield.

Points transferred from a bank program, but the seat was not available at the time of booking. Check, hold (where possible), and only then transfer.

Tickets booked in the wrong cabin. Reward Saver, Reward Plus, and Reward Choice on Skywards differ materially in miles price, as do Tier 1, 2, and 3 on Etihad Guest. Verify the cabin and tier before you confirm.

A clean award booking is a small, repeatable discipline: search, model, transfer, book, ticket, seat. Done right, it converts a year of card spend into a long-haul Business trip that would otherwise cost AED 15,000 in cash.
